Community Integration

Meaningful opportunities to connect, participate, and belong within the San Diego community.

Community Integration

Belonging Beyond the Front Door

Real connections, real friendships, and real participation in the San Diego community — built around each person's interests and at their comfort level.

True independence extends far beyond the walls of home. Our Community Integration services help individuals build meaningful relationships, explore interests, and participate fully in the vibrant San Diego community. We facilitate connections to social groups, recreational programs, volunteer opportunities, and employment pathways that align with each person's passions and strengths.

San Diego offers an incredible range of community resources, and our job is to help you access them. From local parks and recreation programs to art classes, fitness centers, volunteer organizations, and social clubs — we connect individuals with opportunities that match their unique interests.

Community integration isn't just about being present in community spaces — it's about genuine belonging. Our staff help facilitate natural interactions, coach conversation skills, and support individuals in building authentic relationships with peers, neighbors, and community members.

For individuals interested in employment, we provide pre-vocational exploration including job shadowing, informational interviews, volunteer placements, and support with applications and interviews. We partner with local businesses that value inclusive hiring practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of community activities are available?
San Diego offers endless options — art classes, sports leagues, fitness centers, volunteer programs, social clubs, religious organizations, community gardens, library programs, music groups, cooking classes, and much more. We help individuals find what truly interests them.
Does Community Integration include employment support?
Yes. While we're not a job placement agency, we provide pre-vocational exploration, job shadowing, volunteer placements, resume help, and interview coaching. For individuals who are ready, we connect them with supported employment programs and inclusive employers.
How much support will staff provide during outings?
It depends on the individual. Some people need one-on-one support at first, while others just need an occasional check-in. We start with the level of support each person needs and gradually reduce it as their confidence and comfort grow.
Can Community Integration help with social isolation?
Absolutely. Social isolation is one of the most common challenges for autistic adults, and it's one of our primary areas of focus. We help individuals build real friendships, join groups, and become active participants in their communities.
How is this service funded?
Community Integration services are funded through the San Diego Regional Center as part of the individual's IPP. There is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible individuals.
